I think that it’s quite possible that this car can push Red Bull higher in the field. Nothing except the internal gearbox has been carried over from the RB4 and Reanult has been able to increase the power of their engine which runs in the RB5 so i can’t see why RB can’t go further and maybe even score a maiden win.
Yeah Rosbif I did see your question about the RB5 posted earlier this week but I only saw it after a best answer had been chosen. Plus my internet usage didn’t allow me to view the CGI video.

I’m still not certain that Adrian Newey is THE best designer in F1 anymore. He may be a genius yes, but his ideas aren’t revolutionary anymore, and while this may be his last chance to show that he still can, I just feel that nowadays it’s no longer the vision of one man that can make the difference, so the team around him needs to be the best and at Red Bull I don’t think it is. To be honest they struggled to develop their car last year because they are a big team trying to flex their muscles, trying numerous ’solutions’ rather than making a snap decision like STR (granted they did benefit from getting RBR’s best ideas) and it cost them. I feel the same thing could happen again this year, and even Newey isn’t the same man who dreamt up the FW14 or the MP4-14, so I think they’ll really have to push the development in order to get ahead of the establishment.
PS. the last regs change before 1998 was in 1994, and look at the FW16 that Newey came up with that year… wasn’t great was it!?!

Yes, it’s perfectly possible now that Renault have been allowed to catch up the advances which other teams somehow made in 2008 despite the engine evolution ban.
The RB5 looks quick (not that that is a reliable guide to performance… Brabham BT55, anybody… ), and Adrian Newey is one of the great innovators of modern F1 (as far as the hugely restrictive rules allow him to be), so if anybody is going to find extra performance within the new rules he may be the man.
Vettel has proved that he can win races, Webber has shown he can be quick at times. Either of them could make the breakthrough for RB.
Did you see my question from earlier this week when the CGI video of the car was released?.;_ylv=3?qid=20090207045853AAlFh8t

This is a very interesting one.
There is no doubt that by the looks of it the RB5 will be a step forward for the team, but personally I can’t help but feel some of the other cars - BMW, for example, are a tad “under-developed”, and I think it would be pretty crazy if the front wings we saw on the BMW and others weren’t made to be much more advanced by the 1st race. It may well be a case of wanting to keep ideas to themselves, while Red Bull may be less cautious of what they have.
Also don’t forget Red Bull’s poor reliability record. It looks as though, once again, the team is favoring out-right performance over some degree of reliability. If you take a look at the rear end of the car you’ll see the exhaust is very close to the right-rear suspension. It remains to be seen whether they’ll change that by channeling the fumes from the suspension arm, as one must fear the worst for that suspension under those heats.
Apart from that the RB looks quite like the McLaren design, mind you, look at those rear endplates, absolutely huge.
The source at the end of this answer has a very interesting analysis of the RB5.

1st impressions: It looks nice but the gearbox broke after 14 laps yesterday…
However, I think Vettel and Webber will make a great team and the whole team are fixed on winning after STR in Monza last year…

does the nose remind anyone else of the concord, hahaha we know how fast that was.

Seems pretty good so far in terms of speed.
Of all the tests runs so far its only really been beaten by the 2008 “STR3″ and this seasons McLaren MP4-24……but with the rear wing from last season.
So from the rest of the 2009 spec cars its tested against its looking pretty good, only problem is Red Bull like Jaguar and Stewart Grand Prix before it the cars start fast but loses momentum due to a lack of Development during the season.
The RB5 is in very many ways like the SF3 from 1999, looked good, raced well, few reliability issues in testing….. yes the SF3 did win a race in ‘99 however it did loose out on pace to the other teams as the season went on.

If the RB5 is a top 8 car out of the box and there’s a race that’s wet within 6 into the season, then they may just have a chance, I class both Webber and Vettel in the top 5 current wet weather drivers and the Red Bull (not Torro) is usually at its most competitive at the start of the season.
I hope either Toyota or Red Bull get a maiden win this year, for the strength of the sport.
